Introduction: tobacco use is widespread throughout the world. The youngest are very vulnerable to this consumption for various reasons.
Objective: to describe smoking dependence in students of Health Technology at Facultad de Ciencias Médicas “10 de Octubre”.
Methods: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out between March and September 2022, in Health Technology students of Facultad de Ciencias Médicas “10 de Octubre” of Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de La Habana. A population of 78 smoking students of Health Technology was studied. The Fagerstrom test was used as a research instrument.
Results: most of the students consumed their first cigarette in the first 5 minutes after getting up (n = 38), found it difficult not to smoke in places where it is forbidden (n = 66) and reported that the cigarette they most disliked to quit smoking was the first one in the morning (n = 65). More than half (n = 66) of the students smoke more than 10 cigarettes per day. Also, 57 students smoke more frequently during the first hours after waking up than during the rest of the day, and 60 students smoke, even if they are so sick that they have to stay in bed most of the day.
Conclusions: the students showed a high dependence on smoking.
