Characterization of patients operated on for anthrax at Policlínico Lawton

Introduction: Deeper infections that give rise to multiple secretory skin sinuses are called anthrax. Like boils, these lesions often require incision and drainage before healing begins.
Objective: To characterize patients operated on for anthrax in the minor ambulatory surgery department of the Policlínico Lawton.
Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive observational study, in the population attended in the outpatient minor surgery department of the Policlínico Lawton (10 de Octubre municipality, Havana) during 2022. A series of 15 cases was studied. The statistical analysis was descriptive.
Results: patients were predominantly male (73.33 %), between 40 and 50 years of age (45.45 %), with diabetes mellitus (60 %), smokers (60 %) and white skin (73 %). The most frequent locations were the back (33 %), 7 cm as lesion size (20 %) and en bloc resection as surgical procedure (53.33 %); in the latter, only one complication (hemorrhage) occurred.
Conclusions: it was characterized by being constituted by patients between the fourth and fifth decades of life, fundamentally of male sex and white skin, smokers, with a history of diabetes mellitus. Its most common location is the back, with a predominance of up to 7 cm in size, for which the surgical procedure of excellence is en bloc resection, with few complications.
